At the end of October, we reported that the 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition, which was the star of the Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), would go under the hammer at RM Sotheby's in New York. Last Friday, the car, estimated at $1.5-2 million, sold for $1,655,000 (about £1,321,000).

The Lamborghini Countach auctioned at RM Sotheby's was one of two used in the filming of The Wolf of Wall Street. While the one that was sold survived the film unscathed, the second car had a less fortunate destiny, as it was used in the scene in which stockbroker Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, repeatedly crashed his car under the influence of drugs. Since there was no stunt double for the Lamborghini, the authentic 1989 Countach suffered damage during filming and is presently inoperable.

Despite its battered condition, the second Lamborghini Countach also went up for auction, the same estimated price range as its unscathed counterpart from the film ($1.5-2 million).

The 'On the Grid' auction, hosted by Bonhams, took place on 25 November during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. However, bidders seemed hesitant about the damaged car, regardless of its film history, and the bids stalled at $1.35 million. This fell short of the reserve price, meaning that the destroyed Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition from The Wolf of Wall Street remained unsold.
