Canadian. A Fall scene pastel on paper by Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820-1901) of a fully loaded birchbark canoe approaching the bottom of the falls at the Kaministiquia River. Faintly inscribed, "Falls to the Kaministiquia River CW (Canada West)", lower left and signed, "A. W. Holdstock", lower right. Alfred Worsley Holdstock was a prolific 19th-century landscape painter and educator who became a significant figure in documenting the early Canadian frontier. Born in Bath, England, and educated at Oxford University, Holdstock immigrated to Montreal in 1850. Ontario. 3rd quarter 19th century. Signed, lower right. Titled, lower left.
