Canadian. A pastel on paper by Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820-1901) of a birchbark canoe coming to shore before the rapids with fall colours in the background. Marked in pencil, "Decharge des paresseux Kaministiquia River, CW (Canada West)", lower left and signed, "A W Holdstock", lower right. Alfred Worsley Holdstock was a prolific 19th-century landscape painter and educator who became a significant figure in documenting the early Canadian frontier. Born in Bath, England, and educated at Oxford University, Holdstock immigrated to Montreal in 1850. Ontario. 3rd quarter 19th century. Signed, lower right. Titled, lower left.
