CHARTIER (Alain). The Deeds and Sayings of the late, well-remembered Master Alain Chartier, who during his lifetime served as Secretary to the late King Charles VII. Newly printed, revised, and corrected beyond the previous editions, and divided into chapters to facilitate understanding of their contents. Includes the *Debate on Fat and Lean*, which had not yet been printed, along with a table of contents for this volume. All newly printed in Paris. Paris, Anthoine Couteau for Galliot du Pré, 1526. Folio (270 x 195 mm), red morocco, with cold-stamped interlacing fillets on the covers forming a diamond-rectangle pattern with gilded corner fleurons; spine with raised bands adorned with cold-stamped fillets and gilded fleurons; inner fore-edge decorated with gilded scrolls and fillets; gilded edges (Bernasconi). A beautiful, large-format Gothic edition of the works of Alain Chartier, the most admired poet of his time. Title page adorned with a historiated initial; a very beautiful three-quarters-page woodcut at the head of the text depicting the author writing his book within a floral frame; another smaller one (a reader in a pulpit), and a genealogical chart tracing the royal lineage from Saint Louis to Edward III. Beautiful printing in bastarde type in two columns. A fine copy, with generous margins, perfectly preserved, and elegantly bound. Slight water stain at the very edge of one leaf.
